"Traffic Data Collection with Enginering Experience"

Traffic Volume Data (Average Daily Traffic)

Traffic volume data is the amount of traffic (consisting of passenger vehicles, buses, commercial vehicles, etc.) traveling along a section of roadway.  Traffic volume data is typically collected over a 24-hour period with an automatic traffic recorder, such as the IRD Traffic ACE (aluminum casing) shown in the photo.

Turning Movement Count Data

Turning movement count data is the amount of traffic conducting the various turning maneuvers (i.e., left turns, through, right turns) at an intersection (per approach).  Turning movement count data is typically collected over a two-hour period (in 15-minute intervals) during the morning (7:00 – 9:00 AM), noon (11:00 – 1:00 PM) and evening (4:00 – 6:00 PM) peak periods; however, a school (2:30 – 4:30 PM) peak period may also be collected during a typical weekday. Turning movement count data is typically collected with an electronic TMC Board such as the JAMAR Baord shown in the photo.

Speed Classification Data

Speed classification data is the collection of vehicle speeds for each vehicle traveling a section of roadway.  Speed classification data is typically collected over a 24-hour period (in 15-minute intervals) with an automatic traffic recorder, such as the IRD Traffic ACE (aluminum casing) shown in the photo.

Vehicle Classification Data

Vehicle classification data is the collection of vehicle types (e.g., passenger vehicle, bus, commercial vehicle, etc.) for each vehicle traveling a section of roadway.  Vehicle classification data is typically collected over a 24-hour period (in 15-minute intervals) with an automatic traffic recorder, such as the IRD Traffic ACE (aluminum casing) shown in the photo.

Origin-Destination (O-D) Data

Origin – destination data is the determination of where vehicle trips begin and end, usually between traffic analyses zones for large planning studies or between entrance and exit locations for small operations studies.  Origin-destination studies are typically conducted using license plate or vehicle type matching techniques.

Travel Time Data

Travel time is the time associated with traveling a specific section of roadway, usually to determine delay associated with roadway congestion or confirming traffic signal progression along a roadway traffic signalized network.  Travel time data is typically collected using video recording for documenting roadway features along the roadway or by using GPS (global positioning system) instrumentation for more detailed speed data profiles along the roadway section.

Pedestrian Counts

Pedestrian count data is collected to determine the number of pedestrians crossing a roadway, usually at an intersection crosswalk, and to determine the direction of travel.  Similar to turning movement count data, pedestrian count data is recorded in 15-minute intervals over a 2-hour period.   Pedestrian count data is used for traffic signal timing studies and pedestrian crossing studies.
